E.W. Bullinger: The Bullinger Bible

Updated on August 16, 2014

AKA: The Companion Bible

If you haven't heard of the Bullinger Bible aka:

"The Companion Bible", let me say that you are in for a treat.

Out of all the many bibles and materials I have in my library of Biblical studies, my Companion Bible is the one I like the most.

It is an entirely different kind of study BIble in that it does not give a commentary. Yes, that's right. The contents are that of historical fact based on the Word of God itself.

Bullinger has many other works that give commentary into the books and lessons in the Bible, but this is not one of those items. In short, it's the Word of God, explained according to its origin and the translation of the 1611 King James Version of the Bible.

Briefly, I have given an overview of the composition of this literary work to give you an idea of what you will find in the Bulliinger Companion Bible.

Ethelbert William Bullinger

The Man Behind the Masterpiece.

Before I tell you about the Bullinger Bible, it is only fitting that I share with you a few facts about the Man behind the Masterpiece who has helped so many in the study of the Word of God.

E.W. Bullinger is considered to be one of the most repsected teachers of the Bible and scholars of the 19th Century. In a place called Canterbury in Kent, England on December 15h, a little boy name Ethelbert William Bullinger was born in the year 1837.

It seems that E.W. grew up in a religious environment leading him to King's College in London and into a lifelong study of the scriptures and becoming well versed in biblical languages. He was ordained in 1862 by the Church of England and became a successful theologian as was his distant relative Johann H. Bullinger. Nineteen years later, in 1881, he was awarded an honorary degree as a Doctor of Divinity by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

From his life studies, Mr. Bullinger has made these conclusions, in which he taught and based his belief on as true:

He believed and taught on a real pre and post tribulation, the premillennial rapture of the church, that the church actually began during Paul's ministry after the disciples according to Acts 28:28 and that those before that time were still under the age of the law, not the age or dispensation of grace.

Over the years Ethetbert would come to write many books and commentaries leading up to his masterpiece some say, the Companion Bible. Although he went home to the Lord on June 6th, 1913 at the age of 75, his legacy remains as being a leader in biblical theology.

The Companion Bible

Overview - The Preface

In the preface of the Companion Bible it explains how to use this work and get the most out of what the text actually means. It is based on the Old English translation that was originally in six parts.

Why is it called the Companion Bible?

This BIble has very large side margins that includes compatible verses, Hebrew/Greek translations, names of God and more information that add to the reading experience and understanding on the part of the reader.

Bullinger wanted to make it clear that the Companion Bible is not a man-made version of the Word of God. Nor is it a new or an amended translation of any kind, and it is not a commentary. In fact, it is based on the 1886 Parallel version that King James authorized and had published in 1611.

There is a detailed word by word explanation of each verse, where needed. The author has taken strides great in making sure there was no watering down of the true meaning of what the LORD Jehovah was conveying to His writers. He is sure not to give any opinion or try to interpret what he may think the scriptures are saying. Therefore, leaving it a pure translation.

Synopsis of the Companion Bible

For the sake of time I will give a limited description of each.

You can view the entire preface in the link below.

  • There are different "types" or "fonts" in the Bible. This is to distinquish Who (meaning Deity) is speaking, especially when it comes to the names of God and the specific title God is called in that passage.
  • The names of God or the pronoun used for it, are always in capital letters letting you know it is a Divine person who is doing the speaking.
  • The Hebrew/Greek text is also given when needed along with the English version.
  • The book of Psalms also includes titles and sub-titles to help understand when, where and who is writing the passage.
  • Pronunciation keys are given in the Appendix for correct usage of proper names.
  • Proper dates and names are given to the account and an explanation for each. Extensive study can be done with the charts given in an appendix. They are in order of when they appreared in the Bible, not alphabetically.
  • Spacing is left out where it was not originally part of the text, but it also includes the version that is divided into verses.

NOTE: (The original scriptures are not divided into chapters or verses. They were added later by translators, and that is why some verses break abruptly and in the wrong spots.)

  • The explanation of what a number means to a passage is given. Example when God refers to a specific number such as 3 or 9.
  • Synonyms are given to explain a specific word in the text for that time period.
  • The first time something happens in the Bible is noted.
  • The newest archaeological discoveries are noted, along with the customs, cultures, money exchange, weights, measurements are given in an Appendix for each reference that mentions these items. This is a great help.
  • There is a list of abbreviations in the preface that need to be referred to from time to time.
  • All Hebrew words are given in their root form for clarity, not the modern translation.
  • Every book is introduced and divided into a structural format using an outline form. It is very in depth and comprehensive.
